Wistron Achieves UL2799 Platinum Certification in 2024: A Milestone in Zero Waste Innovation

SDGs

In 2024, Wistron Zhongshan successfully upgraded its UL2799 certification from Gold to Platinum. This prestigious recognition highlights our commitment to advancing waste management through technological innovation—such as process optimization and digital management—and full stakeholder engagement, including our supply chain and employees. The core of the Platinum certification lies in transitioning from “high recycling” to “zero landfill,” with a waste conversion rate improved from 99% to 100%.

Key Initiatives and Practices
  1. Source Reduction and Circular Utilization
    • Process Optimization: By refining PCB design and maximizing the use of edge areas, we significantly reduced PCB edge waste, cutting down approximately 25 metric tons annually.
    • New Technology Implementation: In 2024, we introduced an activated carbon regeneration process for air purification systems. This high-temperature method volatilizes organic solvents from saturated carbon and enhances pore structure under optimal activation conditions, increasing iodine value and restoring adsorption capacity. As a pilot project, our TB3 facility in South China successfully regenerated 21.31 metric tons of activated carbon.
  2. Controlled Energy Recovery from Incineration
    • Platinum-level certification requires that energy recovery from incineration not exceed 10%. Upon reviewing downstream waste treatment methods, we identified cases where thermal energy was not recovered or where new technologies were used but incineration remained the primary method. In early 2024, we revised our vendor selection criteria during the bidding process to ensure that all downstream partners employ treatment methods compliant with UL2799 Platinum standards.
  3. Ongoing Collaboration with Suppliers and Employees
    • Throughout 2024, Wistron continued its waste reduction efforts by promoting five key strategies: vendor recycling, in-house recycling, reuse and refurbishment, packaging changes, and process optimization. These initiatives collectively reduced waste by 409.38 metric tons over the year.

Year UL2799 Certification Level Conversion Rate Energy Recovery from Incineration
2023 Gold 99% 8%
2024 Platinum 100% 7%
